Larry, and Judith Burgess - The Owners!

In life, many different things can be considered a lifetime dream. To Judith Burgess and Larry Lowman, owners of Bridlewood Farm, owning a farm where they could enjoy their passion was theirs.

Born in Gilbert, West Virginia, Judith relocated to Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1978. Larry, born in Valdese, North Carolina, moved to Murfreesboro in 1963. Both chose this Middle Tennessee town because of their love for the Tennessee Walking Horse. Judith began her show ring career in 1976 with the purchase of Melody’s Melody, the 1976 World Champion Mare. For Larry, a walk-trot pony introduced him to the World Championship winner’s circle in 1966.

Judith has developed a unique eye for selecting young prospects and soon to be top show horses. Larry, on the other hand was one of the nation’s leading equine photographers for over twenty-one years. He has a keen sense for promotion, public relations and marketing. Together they form a dynamic team that has achieved an astonishing world championship record over the last sixteen years. They have claimed two World Grand Championship titles, the 1988 15.2 Amateur World Grand Championship with "Delight’s Royal Haze", and the 1991 Show Pleasure World Grand Championship with "Outworlder". They have also won nine World Championships with such horses as "Eb’s Talk Of The Town", winner of three World Championship titles;"Spooky Mountain";" The Secret’s Out", Four Year Old Stallion, World Champion Aged Stallion and Reserve World Grand Champion; Pushed To The Limit, winner of two World Championship Titles in one year; and "Outworlder", Men’s Amateur Show Pleasure World Champion.

They have attained Reserve World Championship status three times with "Knights Black Dude", "Kerche Secret Spirit" and "Pushers Party Valentine" and two Reserve World Champions, along with many class ribbons at the Celebration and Futurity.

They have also owned, sold or raised such greats such as "Uh-Oh", 1997 Three-Year-Old Amateur Plantation World Champion; "Pushover The Top", 1996 Super Horse Award winner; "The Snow Job", ten time World Champion; "Heart 109", World Champion Mare and dam of the great stallion "Poison"; "Cause For Alarm", two-time Plantation World Champion; "Pushin’ In Dixie", muliti World Champion; "Knight’s Black Dude", World and Reserve World Champion; "Ragtime Dixie", Reserve Futurity Champion; "What’s Better Than Cash"; "Pusher’s Funny Girl"; and "Absolutely Magic", 1997 Dixie Jubilee Regional TWHBEA Two-Year-Old Futurity Winner.

In 1992, Judith and Larry decided to fulfill their lifetime dream and purchase a 68 acre farm outside Shelbyville Tennessee, and named it Bridlewood. Their idea was to design a first-of–its-kind equine community of manufactured homes just for horse people. With homes already occupying half of the limited 20 lots, the private community has become a popular gathering place for weekend residents during the horse show season for afternoon barbecues, or just to engage in friendly horse talk.

After purchasing more land and more broodmares, it was just a matter of time before they ventured into the breeding end of the business. In 1993, they elected to stand Ironworks, the #1 plantation stallion in the industry. In the spring of 1994, five – time World Champion "Ultra Copy" was added to the lineup. On a trip to Georgia in the fall of 1994, Judith and Larry found and purchased a stallion by the name of "Generator’s Magic", a stallion who had been only bred to some local mares, but whose colts had been showing some promise. Since that time, "Generator’s Man Of Magic" has won the Four-Year-Old World Grand Championship and "Absolutely Magic" has won the 1997 Two-Year-Old Dixie Jubilee Regional TWHBEA Futurity.

In June of 1995 a fire destroyed the stallion, broodmare, and breeding barn. All three breeding stallions, including twenty-one mares and foals were saved. In early 1996, a new site was chosen on the farm and construction began on the ultra modern facility. Totally designed by Judith and Larry, their idea was to build a new concept for the industry, one that would compliment the Tennessee Walking Horse breed. The new facility contains the unusual stallion center; a state – of – the – art breeding barn, where daily semen shipments are sent all over the U.S., Canada, and several foreign countries; quarantine stalls; a broodmare checking and testing area; and foaling stalls, all built for efficiency and safety of all horses.

As if they didn’t have enough to do, Judith and Larry are Board of Director members for several different organizations within the horse industry and for their favorite charity, Easter Seals. They founded and manage the Tennessee State Championship Horse Show, A two-day event that is always held Thanksgiving weekend in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In the last seven years, they have contributed $141,000 from proceeds of the show to Easter Seals.

Now comprising over two-hundred acres and currently standing an impressive line up of eleven champion stallions, Bridlewood Farm is definitely a lifetime dream for two people who enjoy what they do and has become one of the premier farms in the Walking Horse industry.
